What Every Skateboarder Needs?
I always carry more items than I need, but most of the time I don’t need them. There are days when you can save a session just by bringing in extra bearings and skate tools.
Not only can I save my session, but I can help another skater, and people really appreciate it. We are all there and often need items only when it’s too late.
Skateboard Backpack Essential
You may break bearings, come across shelves that require waxing, patch yourself, or replace torn laces.
So I decided to look at the skateboard backpack and see what it was. Here are 11 essentials to carry with you when you electric skateboard.
Skate Tool
The most important thing you really need to bring with you when skateboarding is the skate tool. I was able to bring home more drives than I can remember. I love tweaking the board every time I go out and ride, especially when I’m riding a transition.
Not all skate tools are the same, but you really get what you pay for. My favorite is still the silver skate tool, but all I’m missing is the Lisredder.
- It’s rugged and super fast when removing or replacing hardware.
- Compatible with Allen and Philips bolts
- Can be used to scratch the grip tape
- You can fine-tune the track
Additional Bearings (or Two)
Bearings break, especially when riding cheap bearings like Bones Reds and Mini Logo. I always have an extra set that I can help if someone breaks it, not just for me. Of course, you don’t have to carry new bearings like I do.
With just a few old bearings, you can proceed with your session without any problems. Riding on one bearing doesn’t work. You can also add some speed rings / washers. Whenever I replace wheels or bearings, I misplace them.
Hardware
Hardware is usually damaged if it is overtightened or worn over time. It’s always a good idea to bring a set of bolts and nuts. You don’t need it often, but you’ll be happy to bring it with you.
Axle Nut
Axle nuts are broken and wear out really fast with frequent priming. They are very cheap and can save you days when you need to replace the bearings. Not being able to put the axle nut back on the axle screw can be quite frustrating.
Pocket Knife or Stanley Knife
You can use a utility knife or pocket knife to cut shoelaces, cut tips, and cut edges when applying grip tape.
First Aid Kit
Sometimes you learn in difficult ways. Recently, I wanted to change the grip tape, so I was able to cut myself with a utility knife. Fortunately, I was smart enough for someone to bring a bandage, so I was able to patch it myself.
I now have a small first aid kit just in case. Hopefully I or someone else won’t need it right away.
Food & Drink
Obviously maintaining hydration is important and skateboarding is always thirsty. I usually bring one or two Camelbak bottles and fill them with water to the edge.
When it comes to food; bananas work wonders to get energy right away, and if you’re in a long session, making a couple of sandwiches won’t hurt. It’s up to you to choose the food you want. This is my personal favorite.
Wax
Wax is great for practicing curb slappy, polishing rusty flat bars, and dry shelves. I often wax the board a little on the board slide coping, but that really makes a difference. Be careful not to overdo it and ask your fellow skaters if they care.
Waxing without asking is considered rude, but recently I met a couple of roller blades waxing copings in a local park. They really went outboard. Perhaps it had something to do with their inability to grind. Fortunately, I always had a grip tape and removed the wax.
Be sure to wrap it in a plastic bag as the wax may melt. As a bonus, bring sandpaper or grip tape.
Shoelace
Snapping laces is part of the game, but it’s very annoying. It can usually be repaired temporarily, but you may need to replace the laces. Fortunately, skate shoes often come with additional laces for easy storage in your backpack.
Phone
When you skateboard, you probably want to bring your cell phone so that you can call if you get injured. Not only is it perfect for emergencies, but a smartphone with a decent camera is great for taking great pictures.
Tissue
Not only is tissue useful for cleaning your hands, but you may have to go occasionally.
It’s a less important skateboard thing, but it’s still useful
Also, you don’t have to bring it with you, but let’s take a quick look at what’s convenient to take home.
Skating Backpack
I love skate bags. There are lots of small pockets to store your luggage, and it’s very convenient to be able to attach a skateboard. The only downside is that the grip tape will eventually eat up the bag, even though some bags are better than others.
Final Idea
If you need to select one of this list, it will definitely be a skate tool. It saves me many times, and I always hear skaters asking, “Hey, does anyone bring skating tools?” So even skate tools may not be that important, but if no one brings them, you’ll have a bad time.
Finally, try to put your back in a place where it is difficult for others to steal yours. Some places are safer than others. Please be careful about your belongings.
